the friday files

Last December, I had the best intentions of making an advent calendar. As a child growing up, I loved the ritual of being able to open a little door every morning in anticipation of the big day. It’s a tradition I wanted to pass on to my own son and I thought it would be great if we had a permanent calendar we could pull out each year.  Well, last Christmas came and went and I never made the darned thing.

This year I’m determined we will have it up and ready for December 1st which means this weekend I will be busy conceiving and designing my advent calendar. I have an idea in mind but I won’t know until I go shopping for all the supplies how it will turn out.

With a bit of luck, I’ll be showing you how it turned out in the next few weeks. In the meantime, check out all these 25 great advent calendar ideas that Jordan Ferney pulled together for Babble.

With holidays and entertaining in mind check out so me of these beautiful photos from the portfolio of Eric Piasecki.

Me too! My mother made a wonderful Christmas tree advent calendar when we were little and we took turns pulling a felt ornament out of the little bag and decorating the tree all month. When my grandmother arrived for Christmas, she would put the star at the top on the 24th.
So I really want my son to have that experience. I’ve been Pinteresting up a storm and even bought a glue gun last weekend… Looking forward to seeing yours!

Advent calendars are such a lovely tradition. I’m ashamed to admit that I’m 26 and my dad just dropped mine off last week. I hope he never stops!

I was JUST thinking about advent calendars today! I made one when I was about 8- with felt and sequins and little glass beads. The instructions came from “Canadian Living” magazine I think. My Mom just gave it to me last year so my kids can now enjoy it. It’s a little worse for wear after all these years but I love that it’s now a tradition in my house too!

Rachel and I have been busy crafting 2 advent calendars for our upcoming Market…taking a little longer than expected but hopefully they’ll turn out as we hope! I think we’re both hoping that they don’t sell :)
