I don’t care how old you are, the beginning of September always feels like the start of a new year. It’s hard to shake that back-to-school feeling.
I actually found myself looking back over my old notes this week. Starting today, I’m going to be contributing a few posts a month to the HGTV blog, Style Sheet. My first assignment was my Top Five Design Rules. Trouble is, I don’t believe in design rules. Sure, your carpet should extend under your sofa and your curtains will look best if they skim or pool a bit on the floor but the moment you put these things into words someone somewhere will post a photo showing the exact opposite and it will look brilliant. So goes the fickle world of design.
However, I do think there are a few guidelines you can follow to achieve a cohesive look. To see my Top Five Style Guides, head over to HGTV.
Below are some of my favourite interiors from photographer Jean-Marc Palisse’s portfolio. Clearly, homes to get schooled by.

yeah for Emma!
I find pinterest is helping me define my style. I actually clip and save images I like now…and a theme is emerging!
what a great space. congrats on the new gig!
what a wonderful space!
Congrats Emma on your new project.
Looking forward to your Style Sheet posts.
Oh, if you’re watching HGTV this weekend…my house is on Holmes Inspection, episode ‘Moisture Madness’.
@ Kristen S – I totally would if we had cable!
Darn! Well it is up on HGTV.ca’s video section. It’s called ‘Moisture Madness’.
I would love to have lunch on this table, the benches and the tablecloth are fabulous! xoxo
Hello and happy Autumn!
I am so with you on that ‘back to school’ feeling. I too get a wonderful surge of energy and focus as Summer transcends into Autumn, and I feel it even stronger since moving to Sweden.
September is my fave month of the year up here in the North – so many pleasures and treasures to enjoy and savour!
How fun that you are writing for HGTV – I will hop across after this to read on.
Agree with you on the ‘rules’. They are good to know but probably best ‘bent’ in order to achieve something unique and personal. Actually I think this rings true for all aspects of life – not just decor.
Loving your picture parade. Mamma Mia, such talent. The soothing symmetry, broken by interesting detail.. yum yum! Herringbone floors make me weak at the knees.. you know Swedes and their love with Herring..
Have a lovely start to this new week. We opened with pouring rain and grey skies – the perfect mix for a productive day! Off I go..

Darling, I just left a comment over at HGTV but it just vanished after I hit ‘submit’.. Perhaps they need to ‘approve’ it before it is visible..
Just in case.. (in summary) what I said was that I agree with your ‘elements’ – great and insightful tips.
Also am a firm believer in ‘staying true to oneself’, even if this means going against friends, peers, and even professional designers. It is ‘your home’ not theirs..!
Hugs from afar
