I honestly don’t know what I would do without baskets. Every single room in my house has at least one if not many. I use them for everything from toy storage to hat and glove collectors to laundry hampers to clothes storage. If I’m short of closet space I’ll throw a basket on the ground and let it do the hard work. It’s one of the ways I try and keep my house organized.
Lately, I’ve been admiring the Senegalese and Ghanaian baskets that employ a lot of colour and pattern in their design. I thought it might be fun to try my hand at making my own decorated baskets. I figured all I would need was a few plain baskets, some paint and some ScotchBlue brand tape and I would be on my way. Turns out I was right!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- a selection of baskets
- paint in your chosen colours (I used regular latex wall paint)
- brushes, paint rollers and exacto knife
Here’s how to do it:
- I began by sketching out different patterns for the baskets in a notebook. (If you’re confident in your artistic abilities you can skip this step!)
- Using ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape block out different patterns on your baskets.
- Apply your paint
- Wait until the paint is semi-dry and then carefully remove your ScotchBlue tape.
- Sit back and admire your handy work!
The project couldn’t have been simpler. It was super easy to personalize these baskets and give them a bit of character. They now look like they were meant for my bedroom and I know the extra storage will come in handy!

LOVE THIS!! I was just thinking the other day I wanted some painted baskets for my kid’s toys in the living room! I’m totally going to have to try this!
What a great idea! I too use baskets all over our house to hide anything from toys to remote controls. My friends are always in shock when they take a basket lid off and find an entire train set with all of the trains. Its the best most chic way to hide toys!
Amazing idea! Will definitely be trying this for myself!
Would love to know where you got the cushions from that inspired the colours?
Ohh I love those!!! Beautiful!!!
