material trends from ikea

Every now and then I receive some wonderful new inspiration from Ikea. One of the trends they are following for 2012 is the pure simple aesthetics inspired by Japan, particularly as it relates to materials. Think: raw concrete, untreated wood, cast iron, woven banana fibers and light colours. I love the element of texture each of these materials brings to the home.  Feast your eyes on these beautiful images!

As much as I like to this I dislike Ikea, they constantly blow me away! They clearly know what they’re doing (even if every student apartment in the world ends up looking the same)

I’m OBSESSED with those sea urchin hanging lights … if only I could find a place to put them in the house that my husband (who’s 6’4″) wouldn’t poke out his eyes on it!

This year, instead of having resolutions, I’ve decided to have electives, where every three months, just like in middle school, I pick something new to work on. From now until March, my electives are Dressing More Thoughtfully and Home Improvement.

One of the new habits that’s brought me the most joy, however, has to do with neither. I’ve decided to spend the extra money on really nice coffee beans, read up on French presses and really hone my procedure, and it’s paying off. Every morning, I make a terrific cup of coffee and sit down to write in my journal. It’s a wonderful anchor for the rest of the day.

Thanks so much for your wonderful blog. It never fails to inspire me. All the best!

I love these images, especially the light, fresh dining area. Emma, is the top image with the series of low birch (?) cabinets from Ikea? This image got me searching, and I can’t find those cabinets on the Ikea web site!
    Thanks!

@Green Key – yes these images are from Ikea however they come from the Swedish site so their selection of products may be different from what we get in North America.
