As I mentioned yesterday, the September issue of Chatelaine magazine is out and it contains the photos from the bedroom makeover my partner Yasmin and I did. Today, I’m happy to share some of those images with you.
Ta da! The finished room. I think all the fabrics we chose came together really well. With all that pattern we opted for a simple cream bedspread from Pottery Barn and a mix of red and cream pillowcases. The rug, which is possible my favourite item in the room, is by Madelaine Weinrib. To finish the room off and to give it that personal touch we added an original Curtis Jere brass sculpture to the wall.
We used mismatched night tables on either side of the bed to keep the room from looking too contrived. Because the room is small it was important we chose tables that didn’t take up too much visual space. The reflective mirror on the gold cube table helps that piece from feeling too heavy while the thin, hardly-there legs on the small round table are light and airy.
We added this Modern Windsor chair by West Elm to the corner of the room and replaced the vertical binds with soft, white drapes. If you move into a condo with vertical blinds I’d recommend replacing them (if you are allowed!) before doing anything else. They are possibly the worst design invention. (And yes, those are my shoes!)
And because I know everyone enjoys a good before and after let’s take a little look at them side by side. Unfortunately, I failed to get the true before which was without the blue painted wall.
The one difference I really notice about the new bedroom is the addition of texture. By using fabrics with different weights, adding a bedspread with some slight quilting, inserting some reflective elements, placing three dimensional objects on the wall and layering, layering, layering we really softened the overall space and gave the eye places to linger. If you’re embarking on your own bedroom makeover I would try and keep those things in mind.
Here’s a little look of how it all came together in the magazine.
It was such a great experience working with the home team at Chatelaine magazine. We owe a big thank you to Virginie Martocq, Julia Black and Sharalee Mushore (who you might know from her blog Escapade). Also thanks to Roberto Caruso who took these beautiful photographs for the magazine.

this room looks so happy…i need to get this mag and read all about it! congrats again!
looks so happy. what a great place to wake up every morning.
Love the blues and brass accents. The rug is my favourite too. I’ve investigated getting a Madeline Weinrib rug but have been shot down due to the relatively higher pricing in Canada than the U.S.
GORGEOUS! You guys did a fantastic job. My favorite part is the wall. Amazing. I also love how many different shades of blue you layered here.
Very relaxed chic. Very lovely. (And not the same old, same old). You and Yasmin did an amazing job! 5 stars!!
If you have a moment, pop over and see what I have been up to. Nothing fancy like you – but fun for me!
Hugs

Gorgeous, gorgeous room. I love the different fabric patterns- they look great together but not at all matchy matchy. Congrats! xx C
Stunning, it’s put me on an indigo and brass kick!
I’ve also taken the liberty of breaking down some of the elements to create a more affordable version of your room using pieces from Sears, Home Depot, West Elm, CB2 and IKEA.
Because, as beautiful as the pieces you’ve used are…not everyone can afford $700 lamps from Elte!
Feel free to check my site.
Thanks again for the inspiration!
So beautiful! I love the brass accents – and all of that blue! And the shoes of course
Looks fantastic. It’s both warm and inviting, yet quirky too. It’s a great combination.
congrats! i never saw an object like this ‘delicate golden kind of star thing’ on the blue wall, it looks wonderful in the contrast with the deep blue! what is it? straw?
Such a big difference!!! I like how you pulled the eye upward rather than having everything so low- like in the before…
Absolutely fantastic!! And it’s so wonderful to see colour embraced!! Congrats to you and Yasmin

P.S. Loved your H&H spread too!!
Very nice. What is that brass prism pendant? Where is it from. I can’t stop looking away.
@ Natalie – It is from a local store here – greatlighting.com
However, I believe it is a knock-off or variation of a similar light. Unfortunately, I don’t the name or designer. Can anyone else help out?
i love how it all came together – beautiful room!
That light above the bed is particularly gorgeous. The owners of that bedroom must have been ecstatic! Just out of curiosity, how much does a Madeline Wienrib rug cost? Is it a flat weave rug?
You two together have created a dream team. This room is exquisite, a feast for the eyes. I’m in love, your work is perfection.
Looks great Emma, congrats!
@S@sha – the rug costs $1328 for a 6×9 size. It is a cotton flat weave.

@ Tilda – The star things are made of brass and very affordable – $16 each!
I’m picking both of the magazines up today! Lovely work Emma. The blue and the brass…gorgeous.
Hi Emma – I am looking for a carpet, so thanks for introducing me to Madelaine Weinrib’s work! And, love the room!
@AC – definitely go and check out Y&Co’s selection!
Thanks, I’ve looked at all of the Madeline Weinrib’s rugs on the website, but there aren’t any prices. At least not that I ever noticed. That’s more affordable than I expected.
hi! I just read this, i love your choice of blue. We have a curtis jere over our fireplace and I’d really like to use a dark (but not too dark blue) to compliment. were the other walls painted white? any tips for that?
@ Julia Fain – Yes, the other walls were painted white but mainly because it was a rented condo and the owners didn’t want to spend a lot of time having to paint it back. If it had been my room I would have painted all the walls blue. Go bold!
