Cedar, marble and brass. Three materials, I wouldn't normally put together. Cedar seems too rustic for the refinement of marble and brass is a material I associate more with traditional interiors. However, they work perfectly together in this family operated bakery shop in Edessa, Greece.

We're currently working on a project where we will be using a lot of cedar (in the kitchen, bathrooms, and built-ins throughout the house.) I was curious to see examples of where and how it had been used. By far, this Elektra Bakery project by Greek based design firm Studioprototype was the most interesting.

Long rectangular bars of Carrarra Arabescato were used for the food and service counters while black and brass accents like the Tom Dixon Beat lights and intricate signage ground the space and add an elegant touch.

The exterior of the building is clad in tinted cedar boards. The use of wood softens the coldness of the marble and gives the bakery a homely feel. Traditional European oak bread racks, and bespoke counters and trolley's laden with hand made breads and pastries further emphasize the rustic tradition of breadmaking and provide texture and warmth to the setting.

I couldn't resist adding in one of the elevations and plan for this space. Even they are beautifully detailed and refined.

It would be very easy to take these same materials and translate them to a home kitchen. Just imagine cedar plank cabinets with Carrarra Arabescato countertops or backsplash and an island seating area with the Tom Dixon Beat Lights and Tolix Marais stools. What a beautiful kitchen it would be!
