welcome to my new home

After months and months, finally my new website is here. It's been a long time coming! I started my blog back in 2010 with a standard template I picked up from WordPress. It was terrible but the important thing back then was just to start. A few months in, I asked my neighbour Rachel Riordan to draw me a header and a coworker, Andrea Kreuger to build me a blog. They did an amazing job and that blog served me extremely well for four years.

Today, I'm happy to introduce my new blog designed by Trish Papadakos. Not only has the design changed but also the platform (I've gone from WordPress to SquareSpace) so bear with me as I get use to the changes and tweak things as I go. I love the new logo Trish has designed for me - it's simple and clean but with a unmistakable personality. The font was originally designed for the Guggenheim Museum with the intentions of representing a range of artistic voices from Cezanne to Matthew Barney. As Trish explained to me, "it's a distinctive typeface that maintains a good dose of objectivity."  

In the past four years, I've noticed a lot of changes in the blogging world. The landscape has changed and even my own interaction with blogs is very different than it once was. I'll be the first to admit that my attention is now spread over many mediums (pinterest, twitter, instagram, etc) and that my days of commenting on other blogs is infrequent. However I still visit them regularly and look to them daily for inspiration. 

Blogs are still the home base from which everything else stems. The place we can always return to when we're looking for a bit more information or a deeper story. I'm so happy this is my new home.

goals and intentions

Like most of you I have tried numerous ways of setting yearly goals and intentions for myself with the hopes that somehow they will stay with me for the course of 12 months and that I will emerge at the end of December a happier, more productive, more satisfied individual. After years and numerous different methods of trying I've come to the conclusion that it's not that easy. By the time the summer rolls around most of my goals have been long forgotten and I'll I'm dreaming about is my next swim in the lake. In fact, I wasn't even going to set myself any goals this year. But there is something about this time of the year that seems ripe for a bit of reevaluating. With a couple of weeks of holiday behind us and a chance to catch up on all the laundry, tidying, organizing, socializing and playing there is finally a bit of room for a bit of inward reflection and self-evaluation.

I have to admit that I love dreaming and planning for the year ahead. Even if I only remember my goals and intentions for 6 months there is the hope that some of the goodness will rub off and become daily habits. Below are a few of my goals for 2014.

1.Working out. High on my list is exercising at least three times a week. We have a gym at work so there's no excuses. First thing Monday morning I need to sign up and get started. I'm also thinking of doing a ballet bootcamp one night a week.

2. Redesign this blog. It's time to freshen this site up and bring it into 2014! I hope to have this accomplished in the first few months of the year. I'm excited for the changes.

3. Mindful consumption. Quality over quantity is my goal for the coming year across all spectrums. I'm going to have an online garage sale in the coming weeks to clean out some of the things I no longer use that are filling up our home. With every purchase I really want to evaluate whether or not it is something I will have for the long haul.

4. Go green. I love eating salads in the summer but find them hard to eat during the winter months when I'm craving warm comfort food. In November, I started drinking green smoothies again and I'd like to keep that up for the rest of the year along with adding in a few more dishes like this one (Roasted Broccoli, Kale and Chickpeas with Ricotta) from Sunday Suppers.

5. Eat breakfast. I can't believe this one still manages to elude me! I think it's because I like my bed too much in the morning. Given the choice between 10 extra minutes sleeping or eating food I'll always choose sleep which means I'm rushing out the door each morning. Bottom line: I need to get up earlier.

6. More plants. I love homes filled with greenery and I think a few corners of our house could do with a few more plants. I'm even going to try hanging a few of them from the ceiling maybe in our bathroom to start. (Check out my Interiors pinterest board to see which plant I'm thinking of adding.)

a look back at 2013

A few of my (and your) favourite posts from the year that just passed. I've got some exciting things lined up for 2014 that I can't wait to share with you. Did you see this place in the October issue of House and Home Magazine? We'll have lots more inspiring and original home tours in 2014.

marionhousestools2My new kitchen stools from Green Light District! Still loving these immensely. I didn't get up to too many house projects in 2013 (busy, busy year starting my new job) but I have a few renovation ideas I can't wait to get started on.

I kicked off last January with the goal of eating no sugar. I'm thinking of doing that again. I'm totally sugared out - aren't you? I'll supplement with my favourite Owl & Goose green smoothies and lots of medjool dates.

salted-caramel-chocolate-tart-5However there is no way I could ever totally give up desserts. They're still my favourite thing to make. You loved this Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart but this dessert was everyone's favourite.

zuger-2Finally I continued my Artist in Residence series and ended on a high note with a studio tour of designer Albert Zuger. If you're an artist, maker, creator and would like to be featured I'd love to hear from you.

2014 is going to be an exciting year. I can't wait to get started on Monday.

Really, already? I feel like this hot and steamy month just arrived. Apparently not! poof3

My intention for July was to get a little house maintenance done. I made a list and I got, wait for it...two things done on. Oh dear, not exactly inspiring. Perhaps I should have listened to the reader who left the comment about summer being the time to get outside and enjoy things!

If you're curious the items I accomplished were steam cleaning my carpets and laundering pillows. However, I feel I made a little headway in the home renovation department. I'm quite excited to try whitewashing my floors. A couple of readers had some very good suggestions about different ways and methods I could go about this. My goal is try and get them done over the Labour Day long weekend in September (are you reading this, dear husband?)

As for August, I'm going to take that reader's advice and unplug a bit. That might mean a few The Best of posts over here while we gear up for the Fall. I'm planning a redesign of the site plus a few more exciting things.

By the way, did you catch this feature in Fast Company magazine about unplugging? It's a rather hilarious take on how connected we all are and includes a nine step program for how to disappear. It's harder than you think. Poof!
