Lately, I’ve been working on a few bathroom renovations for some of our clients. In fact, one house we are working on has a total of four bathrooms each of which is getting overhauled. There is a tendency for people to favour white washrooms over colourful ones. I guess it has to do with the notions of cleanliness and purity. However, injecting a little colour into your space is a great way to make it stand out. I often find smaller spaces such as bathrooms can carry bold colour in ways that a large room can’t. By the way, adding colour doesn’t mean having to decorating your space in rainbow hues! It can be as simple and elegant as adding some tone on tone variations or choosing materials such as wood to compliment the white fixtures in the space.

It’s possible these days to find coloured bathroom suites in a range of styles and materials. Everything from black wall hung cabinets to light oak to zebra wood to more colourful components. Combining these basic elements with colourful wall and floor tile, vibrant towels and accessories and even interesting lighting can turn a bathroom into an energetic place to be.

Storage is another element we are always having to take into consideration. I haven’t met a client yet that doesn’t want to maximize their ability to put things away. The best way to increase your holding capacity is to add bathroom furniture storage that has lots of drawers, shelves and cabinets especially if your footprint is limited. If you’re lucky enough to have oodles of floor space than adding an entirely freestanding storage unit is the way to go. Think vertically! It’s often easier to go up with storage space in bathrooms than it is to go lengthwise.

in the midst of a laundry room and powder room reno as we speak. The 1970′s tiles came off yesterday, and the painting will happen sometime this weekend. I toyed with turquoise in the laundry room, but have opted to use it in the bathroom for the quick hit of colour I am craving…fingers crossed! This was a great post at the perfect time for me. that black washroom is a beauty!
We recently redid all the bathrooms in our house. We added color of some sort in all of them. Our master has pale blue glass subway tiles, and in the guest bath we went with a grass green color glass large size subway tile (walls in both rooms are a neutral pale gray) In the kids’ baths we went with bright walls and white tiles with a few accent tiles randomly placed. I love them all, even though it was very challenging at first to choose the tiles and colors and have everyone happy!!!
I just painted my master bath black—inspired in part by your bathroom! The color is totally working for me—bold, elegant, and timeless, without being too dark (it helps that it’s a large room with a south-facing window and light colored floor & vanity). I’m bringing in some more natural elements with baskets, linens etc. but am really struggling to find the perfect light fixtures (tried the West Elm Contour Double Sconce but it seemed too bulky). I’d LOVE to see a round-up of affordable lighting options!
Yup – just did a bathroom renovation and then a kitchen. Exhausted but happy. Will be posting kitchen pictures soon. Just as soon as my builder has finished that final snagging list!
I love the green base in the top image. It’s so simple and yet it makes a strong statement. Really a good example of the power of color!
