spotted: my bedroom

10

I recently spotted these photos of my bedroom on photographer Michael Graydon’s website. Michael shot our house for Toronto Life magazine a few months ago and these shots never made it into the final article.

We tried a couple of versions of the bed that day; one nicely made and tucked in and the other slightly messy which you see above. Interesting fact —  I get more inquiries about the bedding in this room than any other question! The funny thing is that it was all very unplanned.

The kilim pillows I made myself and were originally used in our living room. The gold damask comforter is by Frette and was bought in Italy. (At the time, I had no idea how I would end up using the quilt I just knew I loved it and had to have it!) The grey striped sheets are by DwellStudio and were bought for my former bedroom. The cream cotton throw is from India and was picked up on the same trip to Italy. Again, I had no idea where I would end up using it and I certainly never thought I would pair it with the luxurious gold Frette throw! The ruffled cream, grey dotted and coral hand blocked pillows are from West Elm and we’re the only bedding items I purchased specifically for this bedroom. Somehow it all came together! I think the key is those kilim pillows that actually have all the colours used in the room: coral, saffron, black, grey and cream.

Michael also took this shot of the fireplace in our bedroom. The ceramics are by my sister-in-law Erin McCutcheon. It’s a quiet moment that has never been captured before.

My favorite interiors are ones where the room has a story to tell. There’s something to be said for building a collection of items you love and then rearranging them as you need. It’s in the unexpected juxtaposition of objects that the magic starts to happen.

Do you find yourself rearranging your home over and over again?

Today my friend Tilda, who lives in Switzerland and blogs at Madame Herve, is filling us in on her favourite products for small children. I’ve never met Tilda yet I think of her as a kindred spirit. When she first found out I was pregnant in winter of last year she sent out a beautiful package filled with a onesie for Orla and the classic Swiss children’s story, A Bell for Ursli, for Henry. Thank you Tilda! I hope one day we will meet.

My name is Tilda and I am the founder of Studio Hervé, a designstudio based in the neighborhood of Zurich in Switzerland.

I’m really excited to be guest posting for Emma while she gets lots of lovin’ time in with her new baby girl!! Enjoy!

Me, my husband and our 2.5 year old son Loïc, along with a menagerie of vintage stuff, designpieces, material and color samples, live in an old dairy, where we convert everyday messy chaos into life in the country… I graduated as a Product Designer and Interior Designer. After spending five years in the industry I left architecture.  Now, I run a design consulting studio, and we work on furniture and interior projects.

I would like to share some ‘mom thoughts’ about products for the little ones, that in my eyes are useful or smart in everyday life. Generally I think you need a lot of storage space, tons of supersoft blankets and some smart babyshoes. I added some Swiss (or European) related products as well, as example, you’ll find the playkitchen Lili in numerous Swiss toddler households….

1 - Momoll : Play kitchen Lili
2 - Rianne Makkink & Jurgen Bey : Mohair woolen blanket
3 - Oskar Zieta : Kamm coat rack
4 - Collegien : Chaussons
5 - Alfredo Häberli : Take a line for a walk, Moroso
6 - Mohr Polster : Felt Baby swing
7 - Alfredo Häberli : Kids‘Stuff IITTALA
8 - Mika Tolvanen : Restore Basket, Muuto
9 - Sara Carr : Fox

hello! neighbor – jenny and rob

27

This month we’re back in Toronto and back to my neighbourhood of Parkdale. I first met Jenny when she invited me over to help her choose some paint colours for her home. However it was clear to me when I walked in that she didn’t really need my advice! Her home already looked fantastic. I wasn’t surprised when I heard that Jenny has an innovative renovation consulting company called Dwell Contracting. They provide unique services such as advising homeowners on whether they should fix up their current home or buy something new. If you’re in the market for a home they will also accompany you to viewings and give you their unbiased opinion on the home’s possible future issues or more importantly its design potential. It seems to me like they are filling an important gap in the home renovation market that is not serviced by either designers or contractors.

Enjoy the tour!

Names

Jenny Macdonald & Rob Harrison

Occupations

Jenny: Renovation consultant.  Principal and owner of Dwell contracting.

Rob: Director of Marketing at Alliance Films

Kids, pets?

3 boys: Wesley (nearly 5), and twins Emmett & Gillon (both 1-1/2)

Year Home was Built

1903

How long have you lived in your home?

7 years

What’s your favorite room and why?

Jenny:  I’d have to say our kids rooms.  They have so many nice memories attached to them.

Rob: Our new master bedroom because it’s nice and airy- great for reading.

How did you find your home?

Jenny: I had been actively looking for a house in this neighbourhood for a few months.  I saw it first during an Open House.  I really liked that it had a slightly different layout than the standard Victorian.  We’d already lost several in bidding wars and I was determined to get this one.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Jenny: I’ve always loved everything to do with design and architecture, so I’m constantly reading blogs, books, magazines, poking around shops, walking the neighbourhood….I’m drawn to textiles, graphic prints, anything vintage, or hand-made, and, mid-century modern design in general.

How did you end up living in Parkdale?

Jenny: At the time it was one of the only affordable neighbourhood’s in the west-end.  That, and the proximity to High Park and family.  We were looking for somewhere that we could feel at home raising a family.  Now, I can’t imagine living anywhere else.  I feel so lucky to live here!

What did your home look like when you first saw it? What work have you done on it to make it your own?

Jenny: It looked very staged and not entirely lived-in, but it was still warm, and had something special about it.  The previous owner had done a lot of work himself and was a complete perfectionist.  Being in the renovation industry myself, this definitely appealed to me!  We’ve done work in every room of the house, but the big things were finishing the basement, putting in a 2nd bathroom, and re-working the upstairs.  It had 4 small bedrooms- 2 of which were really too small to be very useful, so we made one big master bedroom and extended the bathroom a little bit.  A linen closet was a welcome addition too.

What would your dream house look like?

Jenny:  Modern, open concept, floor to ceiling windows, south facing so it would be flooded with light, extensive use of natural materials.  On a huge tree filled lot within walking distance of Roncesvalles.  I know- keep dreaming!

Rob:  I love ranch style bungalows.  70′s look with a modern feel.  Big yard, big trees.

What was the last thing your purchased for your home?

Jenny: The mirror in the front hallway from Mrs. Huizenga’s on Roncesvalles.

Thanks Jenny and Rob for inviting us into your home. Please feel free to ask Jenny any questions you might have about the work they did on their place!

guest post – sweet potato chronicles

3

Happy Friday everyone! What a sweltering week it has been!

I’m looking forward to it cooling off a bit this weekend. I’m also happy to have Ceri Marsh from the super-informative and tasty family food blog The Sweet Potato Chronicles here today. One of the best presents you can give a new mum is a dish of homemade food (or if you’re lucky like me a freezer full of it – thank you Ruth & Donna!). Below is Ceri’s go-to freezer favourite. I’ll be back here on Monday with a brand new Hello! Neighbor tour. Have a good weekend!

What to Cook When You’re Expecting

When I was expecting my first child I felt overwhelmed by the things I didn’t know. How often should she nurse? How hard do you pat their backs to make them burp? Daily baths? Weekly shampoos? Co-sleeping? The closer my due date came the more it became clear that my husband and I were not nearly ready for what was coming at us. So, I became a little obsessed with preparing the things I could. Which perhaps explains the crying jag I had while we were stroller shopping and my husband suggested that perhaps he’d like to do something else, something not baby related, that afternoon. There was ugly crying.

Somehow the second time around was slightly, if not entirely, better. Even though I knew what was coming when I had my son a couple of years later, there’s still that feeling of never being quite prepared enough. Whether you’re having your first, or like Emma, babe number two, one area you’ll be so glad to be organized is in the kitchen. Or rather, the freezer. Even if you’re nesting, post-birth, it’s an oddly social time. Everyone wants to pop by and visit mother and child, which is lovely. But the last thing on earth you want to be worried about is how you’re going to feed people. And if no one is coming around, you’ll still be happy you’ve got something in the freezer for dinner rather than having to rely on take out because no one can face it. Take some time before your due date to make tomato sauce, chili, lentil soup – anything you can make in large-ish quantities – and get it in the freezer.

This Chicken Parmesan is one of my favourite things to have in the freezer. Never, never make a single batch of this – always double it to have extra. You can serve it over mashed potatoes, have it in a sandwich or chop it coarsely and stir it into a bowl of pasta. It’s the perfect thing to make in preparation for the beautiful chaos that is a new baby. Good luck, Emma, I can’t wait to meet the new addition!

OMG Chicken Parm

Simple Tomato Sauce

1 28 ounce tin of whole plum tomatoes
Good glug of extra virgin olive oil
3 garlic cloves roughly chopped
handful of herbs – basil, oregano, thyme
a splash of red wine vinegar
pinch of salt and pepper

Chicken

4 Chicken breasts cut in half, horizontally

1 1/2 cups Breadcrumbs or Panko

Several basil leaves roughly torn

1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan or Romano cheese

1 cup milk

Method

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Sautee the garlic in the oil for a couple of minutes and then add the tomatoes. Let them simmer and keep breaking them down with the back of a wooden spoon. Simmer for about 20 minutes while you prepare the chicken. Towards the end, add the herbs and season with salt and pepper.

Season your breadcrumbs with some salt and pepper. Sprinkle them on a plate. Pour milk into a shallow bowl. Dip each piece of chicken in milk and dredge in the breadcrumbs.

Brown the chicken pieces in a medium pan with a bit of oil until brown. Don’t worry about cooking the meat through. As each batch cooks, place the chicken in a large casserole dish. Cover the chicken in tomato sauce. Scatter the basil leaves over the sauce. Cover all with the shredded cheese. Pop in the oven for 10  minutes, then increase the heat to 400 degrees for another 10 to 15 minutes. Take out the biggest piece and cut into it to check done-ness.
